This is an addiction that seems to plague so many people and I must confess plagued me for many years. YOU FEEL THAT THERE IS A STRONG FORCE WITHIN YOU DRIVING YOUR ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOUR.
All those well meaning coaches tell you to not have any sugar in the house or to replace it with fruit. BULLOCKS.
There is no logic to addiction, you will steal from the children’s stash, you will get in that car and drive to the nearest shop, you won’t stop until you get your FIX just like a JUNKIE. Then comes the guilt, the shame, the self loathing and the promises that you will never do it again but you always do. Your words have no power and you know it. But with my help I can help you turn it around quickly and easily without having to use any willpower at all.
Here are some steps I took to Break my Sugar Addiction:
1. Drink Crazy Monkey Green Juice
I started to drink cucumber, spinach, lemon, ginger and garlic to kill the Candida and clean up my gut. This started to alkalize my body and I stopped craving the sugar. I also cut out fruit as well. (Please read all about Candida in my free ebook). My symptoms actually got worse before they got better as you go through what’s called Candida Die off.
2. Find a Replacement Reward
You are getting a REWARD from your sugar addiction, it might be a few short moments of pleasure, a friend in times of stress, loneliness, boredom etc. So before you attempt to eliminate it from your life, it’s important to have a replacement reward that has nothing to do with food, i.e. prayer, deep breathing, star jumps. Eliminating sugar will create a vacuum; so it’s better to fill it with something positive – self love and self care – than something that is hurtful, like self sabotage. Care for your tender self so that you feel nourished, capable, rested and strong.
Try these simple shifts: If you know that you always eat biscuits with your tea, switch to a herbal tea instead. This way you will find that you don’t look for biscuits. Do 5 star jumps every time the sugar craving’s start as this gives the brain a dopamine hit, which is really what the “sugar hit” is giving you.
3. Go Easy on Yourself
The first week of sugar abstinence can be uncomfortable, when the cravings are at their most powerful. Be kind to yourself: this is not the time to tackle a large project, to implement lots of changes, or to work overtime. Go to bed earlier. Take naps. Cook simple meals. Spend time in prayer or meditation. Have nice baths.
4. Take Your Focus off Weight Loss
While weight loss is usually a natural consequence of giving up sugar, please don’t make it your focus. It’s better to channel your energy towards one goal at a time. So put aside your weight loss goals for now and focus your energy on healing your sugar addiction. Then, after you’ve found healing with sugar, you can decide how you want to approach any extra weight you’d like to lose.
Weight loss is often a pleasant, natural side effect of taking loving care of your body and freeing yourself from food addiction. In my experience, making it the focus puts too much pressure on your tender heart to lose weight quickly and easily – which can lead to a binge/restrict/binge/restrict cycle with sugar.
Furthermore, you might be delightfully surprised to see how much easier it is to lose weight when you’re not eating so much sugar.
5. Know Your True Value
When you see yourself as a valuable person you will take care of yourself in all ways that are necessary and while yes, your body may be sugar sensitive, and while, yes, you may gorge on sugar, it’s not “you.” It’s just a coping mechanism: how you learned to care for yourself when life felt painful, overwhelming or scary. This is probably something you learned when you were very small. It’s not your fault. Being addicted to sugar or bingeing on sugar is not a character flaw – proof that you’re a terrible person. It’s simply a form of self protection, how you’ve cared for your tender heart.
And if you use sugar to care for your hurts, there’s hope – the story doesn’t end there. Your brain is remarkably malleable – you can retrain your brain and learn new ways of caring for your needs, feelings, emotions, and hurts without sugar. All this is covered in my BREAK FREE PROGRAMME
6. Associate Enough Pain to Your Addiction and You Will Let It Go Easily
All these well meaning people who tell you to clear out all the junk from your cupboards, all I can say is RUBBISH. With any addiction if you want it you will go to whatever lengths you need to go to too get it. You just need to hop in your car and drive to the shops. Simple!!! Addiction has no logic or reasoning and when you even try to break your addiction with willpower alone all that I can say, is that you are setting yourself up for failure each and every time. However with my method of coaching and helping you alkalize the body you will no longer want it. I have successfully helped clients overcome their addiction in 1 session.
7. Listen to Your Body
Give yourself time to experiment and learn about your unique, precious body. Only you will know what foods make you feel your best.
Use your body as a guinea pig: what foods make you feel good? What foods make you feel bad? How did I learn that fruit affects me in the same way that refined sugar does? By observing my body after I ate it. How did I learn what foods were best for me? By observing my body. How did I learn to stop eating gluten? By observing my body. How did I learn to overcome my IBS, by juicing and cleaning up my gut. Deep down you have all the wisdom inside of yourself, and you do know what is right for your body. I teach my clients how to eat intuitively and discover what foods are best for them. So called healthy foods may be ok for some people but toxic for another, so remember that everybody’s body is different. Stop dieting and start trusting yourself around food, make peace with yourself and with food. I am more concerned with the state of your mind, with all this worry about what you are eating and the FEAR of eating something “unhealthy”.
8. Candida Thrives on Sugar
I know this is a tough one to follow: many people rely on Diet sodas as a “free” sugar substitute, especially when they’re craving something sweet. But in my experience, aspartame, Nutrasweet, Splenda, and even low carb sugar products (protein bars that are “low sugar”) don’t quell sugar cravings, but increase them. For many people, they also bring unpleasant side effects. (For me, that was foggy brain and stomach aches.) Also fruit juices are no good either as the sugar just keeps feeding the Candida. I had to learn this the hard way, because when I first became a qualified Juice Therapist I was juicing apples, pineapple, pears and oranges and little did I know I was just feeding the Candida. Also alcohol is a no go area if you are serious about overcoming your sugar addiction, you can’t have health one day and poison the next because this just keeps you locked in the vicious cycle.
9. Start over Whenever you Slip and Fall
You don’t have to wait until the next morning, or succumb to the thinking that says, “I’ve blown it; I might as well have some cake to go with it,” when you slip up and eat sugar. Giving up sugar is hard. It’s ingrained in our holidays, in our meals, in our society.
Be kind to yourself when you mess up, and get right back on track. Use loving self talk to care for yourself when you make a mistake – you can tell yourself, “I can do this.” Or, “Mistakes are how I learn. It’s okay, Heather.” Talk to yourself as the most loving friend would talk to you.
10. Forgive Yourself
I felt very ashamed about my sugar addiction (some health coach I was NOT as I couldn’t control myself around sugar). Releasing that shame was like lifting an enormous weight off my shoulders. We’re all imperfect. We all cope with life in messy ways. If you have food issues, offer yourself compassion. Find self-acceptance. All those times you gorged on sugar? Recognize that you were doing the best you could.
Sugar addiction is not a character defect. It’s often due to biology, imprinting, long ingrained habits, our environment and a whole host of other factors – many of which are not in our control. Can you find forgiveness for yourself? Can you see that it’s not your fault? That it may not be something you could’ve prevented?
When we release the blame – and most of us blame ourselves, and terribly so – we find we can also release the sugar. Forgiveness and compassion are the only way I found peace with sugar. It’s the only way I found that I could stay sugar free long term.
11. All Addictions are rooted in FEAR
Normally the thought of letting go of something that brings us a short fleeting moment of pleasure can fill us with FEAR. How will I COPE without it? Fear can be gripping, intense and paralysing to our entire being. Every one of us has experienced it at some time in our lives, and for some many, many times. However, if we surrender to it and draw upon our innate resource of wisdom through our higher selves, we are able to be present and can then move forward, fearlessly. In others words the only way you can overcome your sugar addiction is to FACE YOUR FEARS HEAD ON. As the saying goes what your RESIST PERSISTS.
So are you ready to FACE YOUR FEARS, to let go of something that is sabotaging/destroying your health and causing a battle in your mind?
